We’re always on the lookout for interesting research to share with you, so when a question came up recently about fibromyalgia and CBD we couldn’t resist digging deeper.

What is fibromyalgia?

According to the Mayo Clinic,

“Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.”

What is CBD?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of the most common cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. THC and CBG are also commonly known cannabinoids.

The biggest difference between CBD and THC is that CBD won’t get you high.

When folks are concerned about getting high from marijuana, they’re talking about the psychoactive effects of THC that give you a “high” sense of euphoria.

CBD doesn’t react with your body the same way THC does. It’s non-psychoactive and anti-inflammatory, making it a great option for pain and inflammation related complaints.

THC is often smoked. CBD can be used as a tincture, salve, or even as a tea or chocolate.

CBD from hemp was also legalized in the 2018 Farm Bill.

How can CBD help fibromyalgia?

We were interested to learn that not many studies have been performed with just CBD and fibromyalgia. Most studies we discovered included THC+CBD for the study.

The effects were still miraculous.

In a recent study published in Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology, researchers found that nearly half (47%) of the participants found enough relief from cannabis to stop using their other painkillers. (It’s important to note that this study focused on 66 people who were consistently taking medication to manage their pain, but weren’t experiencing relief.)

Patients in this study also noticed significant improvements in their sleep and mental health.

Another recent study found similar results.

Should you try CBD to help with fibromyalgia?

If you’re experiencing pain or other fibromyalgia related symptoms, talk to your doctor about trying CBD. CBD is safer than opioids, and its anti-inflammatory properties are marvelous for helping with pain management.
