Cannabidiol (CBD) is gaining traction as an effective remedy for pain. CBD may reduce inflammation, pain, and general discomfort without causing invasive side effects and addiction.
Early research is showing promising results for arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia. While there is no standard treatment (yet), we’ll show you a few ways to get started if you’re ready to try CBD oil for pain.

What does the research say about CBD oil for pain?
CBD for Arthritis Pain
According to a 2016 study, “Transdermal CBD gel significantly reduced joint swelling, limb posture scores as a rating of spontaneous pain, immune cell infiltration and thickening of the synovial membrane in a dose-dependent manner.” Source
This study examined transdermal – or rubbed on the skin, not taken orally – CBD gel for arthritis. The conclusion in this study is profound:
“These data indicate that topical CBD application has therapeutic potential for relief of arthritis pain-related behaviours and inflammation without evident side-effects.” Source
CBD for Spasticity in Multiple Sclerosis
“In adults with multiple sclerosis (MS)-related spasticity, short-term use of oral cannabinoids improves patient-reported spasticity symptoms.” Source
MSTrust explains spasticity this way: “Spasticity is a symptom of multiple sclerosis that causes your muscles to feel stiff, heavy and difficult to move. A spasm is a sudden stiffening of a muscle which may cause a limb to kick out or jerk towards your body.” Source
The same study found that “In adults with chronic pain, patients who were treated with cannabis or cannabinoids are more likely to experience a clinically significant reduction in pain symptoms.” Source
CBD for Fibromyalgia
“After 2 hours of cannabis use, [researchers found] a significant reduction of pain and stiffness, enhancement of relaxation, and an increase in somnolence and feeling of well being.” Source
This same study found improved mental health in patients using CBD.
