If you’re new to cannabidiol (CBD) oil, one of your main concerns may be wondering if CBD is addictive or habit forming.
The short answer is no: CBD oil is NOT addictive.
Unlike its psychoactive cousin THC, CBD won’t get you high and isn’t addictive.
While there are potential side effects such as dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness and fatigue (source), true CBD won’t give you any sort of high.
CBD won’t get you high, but THC will.
“But I heard about someone who got stoned when they used CBD oil this one time…”
Chances are you’ve heard horror stories about CBD. Someone got high using it. Or they got really sick. Or they overdosed and wound up at the hospital.
Here’s the thing: CBD isn’t regulated. Which means if your sketchy neighbor down the street wanted to pour vegetable oil in a glass bottle and slap a label on it that said CBD, he could.
Is it ethical? No. But do people do it? In most states, yes.
And because CBD isn’t regulated, it’s easy for companies trying to make a quick buck to shortcut the extraction process. When this happens, THC can sneak its way into what is sold as cannabidiol.
In fact, in a 2017 study led by Bonn-Miller, 7 out of 10 CBD products were mislabeled.
“Nearly 43 percent of the products contained too little CBD, while about 26 percent contained too much.” Source
If someone you know got high from CBD, it wasn’t CBD they were using. Perhaps they purchased a cheap knock-off, or unknowingly used something mislabeled as CBD. But if they got high, it wasn’t because of CBD.

CBD isn’t addictive.
If you’ve experienced any sort of addiction with your current brand of CBD, you’re not using CBD.
CBD simply isn’t addictive. THC binds to CB1 receptors, producing a high sensation (source). CBD doesn’t do this. (source)
In fact, CBD may help with addiction recovery
Early research indicates that not only is CBD not addictive, it may help with addiction recovery (source).
“Researchers found that, compared to a placebo, CBD reduced drug cue-induced craving and anxiety in the participants.” (source)
